about alicia

"We still turn to each other and say, "What would we have done without Alicia?" As a highly skilled and experienced doula, Alicia is an empowering encourager, an excellent listener, a thoughtful caregiver, a holder of sacred space and a bringer of beauty. She supported us with her intuitive wisdom, lighthearted joy, technical know-how, and deep connection with the human body. Alicia was our advocate as we navigated a surprise hospital birth (due to medical issues) after we'd been planning to deliver at a freestanding birth center. Alicia was with us every step of the way, offering tools and support so that we could have the beautiful, empowering birthing experience we had been dreaming about."

Hello! My name is Alicia and my preferred pronouns are she/her/hers. I get asked all the time why I chose to become a doula, it’s not my  favorite question because the story is anything but grand. I was in my early 30’s, still dabbling with many different ideas for a career but never really able to commit. I was a Hatha Yoga teacher, a nanny, a personal care attendant for children with Autism, a wellness consultant at a local healthfood co-op, and I worked for a group of psychologists in preparation to go to grad-school to become a therapist. I loved helping, caring, nurturing and guiding others but I couldn’t seem to find the drive or passion to make a lifetime commitment to any of the career paths I was working in. It was during this time that a few different people in my life were telling me I should be a doula. At the time, I truly did not understand why they would ever say that. You see, I thought I knew what a doula was and this person most certainly had long silver hair tied in a bun, they definitely had many, many grandchildren and they could knit a sweater in a couple of hours. I fit NONE of that!  So needless to say, my response was either laughter or a look of absolute confusion. And then I’d change the subject. This went on for several YEARS! Finally, one of my doula cheerleaders put a flyer in my hand which said ToLabor would be in Minneapolis for a doula training. She begged me to at least look at the website and training. And I did. And then I signed up. Two hours into the training I had the “Oh S**t!” moment that changed my life forever as I realized I was very much a doula and I was going to have to change my entire life to serve families in birth and beyond. And I did! And I LOVE it! And I haven’t looked back!

Since then I have had the honor of attending over 150 births as a birth doula. All different types of births (vbacs, twins, low-risk and high-risk births, births with the assistance of an epidural, surgical births, unmedicated births, waterbirths…) and in all different types of settings (birth centers, homes, hospitals). Not one birth has been more or less sacred and amazing than another. Over and over, seeing the strength and love that comes through during childbirth brings me so much inspiration and I feel so much gratitude for being invited to support families during these intimate and miraculous moments. I love serving families in this way, with all of my heart and soul.

A common affliction of the birth worker is that we become immediate “birth nerds” and have to KNOW EVERYTHING BIRTH. Since that first birth doula training with ToLabor in 2014 I have signed up for as many trainings as I could possibly manage. I started by training with Blooma to take my background as a Hatha Yoga Teacher and become a Prenatal Yoga Teacher and BYOB (Bring Your Own Baby) Yoga Teacher. I taught regular weekly classes at Blooma for 4 years until it simply became too much to juggle with birth. In 2016, I had the great fortune of studying at an advanced training for a week with Debra Pascali-Bonaro of Orgasmic Birth and Robin Lim, Midwife and CNN Hero in Bali, Indonesia with midwives, doulas and nurses from all over the world. I trained with Gail Tully of Spinning Babies® both to deepen and better my practice as a birth doula and to teach Spinning Babies Parent Classes. I am certified in HypnoBirthing and Hypnobabies as a doula and love helping support self-hypnosis during birth. More recently, I trained with Lamaze to teach childbirth education. I am also a DONA trained Birth&Postpartum Doula and am thrilled I get to support families not only during pregnancy and birth but also during those tender few months after birth.

When I’m not at births, supporting families during the early postpartum period, teaching childbirth education, Spinning Babies® Parent Classes or Prenatal Yoga? I’m usually snuggled up next to my girl Jewel (not a human daughter but a boxer pup daughter) watching a show on Hulu, Amazon or Netflix (yes, I have them all, I’m a sucker for those shows that you are only allowed to watch on one particular site).  I also love practicing Kundalini Yoga and when I still can, going to a good show at First Ave or an outdoor festival with great music! Thank you so much for visiting! I would love to hear from you whether you are interested in my doula, birth education or yoga services or are simply in need of some guidance.
