about alicia

"We still turn to each other and say, "What would we have done without Alicia?" As a highly skilled and experienced doula, Alicia is an empowering encourager, an excellent listener, a thoughtful caregiver, a holder of sacred space and a bringer of beauty. She supported us with her intuitive wisdom, lighthearted joy, technical know-how, and deep connection with the human body. Alicia was our advocate as we navigated a surprise hospital birth (due to medical issues) after we'd been planning to deliver at a freestanding birth center. Alicia was with us every step of the way, offering tools and support so that we could have the beautiful, empowering birthing experience we had been dreaming about."

Elaine and Jason

Hello! My name is Alicia and my preferred pronouns are she/her/hers. I get asked often why I chose to become a doula, it’s not my  favorite question because the story is anything but grand. I was in my early 30’s, still trying on many different careers, but not feeling the passion to make a life-time commitment. I had been working as a Hatha Yoga Teacher, a Nanny, a Personal Care Attendant for children with Autism, a Wellness Consultant, and as an Administrative Assistant for a group of psychologists in preparation to go to grad-school to become a therapist. I loved helping, caring, nurturing and guiding others but I couldn’t seem to find the drive or passion to make a lifetime commitment to any of the career paths I was working in. It was during this time that a few different people in my life were telling me I should be a doula. At the time, I truly did not understand why they would ever say that. You see, I thought I knew what a doula was and this person most certainly had long silver hair tied in a bun, they definitely had many, many grandchildren and they could knit a sweater in a day. I fit none of this.  So, needless to say, my response was to dismiss these suggestions with a scoff and change the subject. This went on for several YEARS! Finally, one of my doula cheerleaders put a flyer in my hand that said ToLabor would be in Minneapolis for a birth doula training. She begged me to at least look at the website and training. And I did. And then I signed up. Two hours into the training I realized I was very much a doula and I was going to have to change my entire life to serve families in pregnancy, birth and beyond. And I did. And I LOVE it! And I haven’t looked back!

Since then, I have had the honor of attending over 150 births as a birth doula, all different types of births and in all different types of settings. Not one birth has been more or less sacred and amazing than another. Over and over, seeing the power, strength and love that comes through during childbirth brings me so much inspiration and I feel tremendous gratitude for being invited to support families during these intimate and miraculous moments. I love serving families in this way, with all of my heart and soul.

I also serve families during the fourth trimester (first three months postpartum) as a postpartum doula and newborn care specialist. It has felt very exciting for me to get to use those skills and experiences to specialize in something so unique and important. Having non-judgmental support and care during those first weeks or months with your newborn is essential in establishing a healthy foundation for the entire family. I specialize in caring for singlets, multiples and preemies and enjoy every aspect of tending to the entire family unit in a holistic way. I love weaving together aspects from various modalities of caring for a newborn to find the best approach for your individual family. I do not believe in a right or wrong way to care for or raise your children. I believe safety comes first, and then YOUR way, and I love getting to help you find your unique way. I also believe you get to change your mind! You get to try different approaches on and see what fits best for you as a family and as individual care-givers. In addition, I can help you with establishing healthy and gentle sleep practices for your newborn so they can learn to sleep through the night on their own when it is healthy and appropriate to do so. Ultimately, my job is to work myself out of a job so you feel confident in caring for your child/children as a family unit when I leave.

I have extensive training in birth, postpartum care and newborn care. Please see below as most of my training is listed. I have gone as far as Bali, Indonesia to seek education from the best providers in the world and continue to look for these opportunities. Most importantly, I know that I never get to grow complacent in learning and growing. I am constantly continuing my education so I can be the best provider of care weather you are hiring me as your Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula, Newborn Care Specialist or Educator.

Most importantly of ALL! I celebrate LGBTQIA+ individuals and families and am queer myself. I honor gender as a galaxy. I celebrate all bodies. I am committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-homophobic and anti-transphobic world.

When I’m not at births, supporting families during the early postpartum period or caring for newborn babies?  I’m usually snuggled up next to my girl Jewel (not a human daughter, but a boxer-pup daughter) watching a show on Hulu, Amazon or Netflix (yes, I have them all, I’m a sucker for those shows that you are only allowed to watch on one particular site).  I also love practicing Kundalini Yoga, riding my bike, going on long walks around the lakes with my dog, and when I still can, going to a good show at First Avenue or an outdoor festival with great music. Thank you so much for visiting! I would love to hear from you whether you are interested in my doula, newborn care, or education services, or are simply in need of some guidance.
